Types of Competition

Regional competitions:

Regional competitions are one-day events held at nearby high schools, usually within an hour of Robinson High School. Since only schools from our region compete, these contests are a great opportunity for both new and experienced members to participate. Three regional competitions are typically held each season in January, February, and March, with a registration fee of about $10.

Statewide competitions:

Statewide competitions are also one-day events held during January, February, and March, but schools from every MAO region in Florida compete together. These competitions provide a more challenging environment and are great preparation for the state tournament while also giving students the chance to meet competitors from across the state. Registration is usually around $10.

State competition:

The state competition is the biggest and most exciting event of the year. Over three days, schools from across Florida compete in a variety of individual and team events covering different areas of mathematics. Students can compete in the subjects they enjoy most while spending time with teammates and meeting students from other schools. Additional information about the competition is shared before the event.

Before competition day:

Sign up for the competition by completing the form that is sent out. You also need to pay your registration fee or talk to our club sponsor if you have difficulties paying your registration fee. Prepare for the competition by doing practice questions and asking your captains if you need help. If you need a ride to a competition, talk to the club leaders in advance.

On competition day:

Get to the competition on time wearing your Robinson High School Mu Alpha Theta shirt. Come prepared with pencils, erasers and a water bottle. If you would like to purchase food, bring cash. Follow the rules and the instructions given. Have fun!

Competition Format

Regional and statewide competitions both include an individual round and a team round.

Individual Round:

In the individual round, students compete within their division and complete a multiple-choice test using a Scantron. Competitors earn 5 points for correct answers, 1 point for unanswered questions, and 0 points for incorrect answers. This round lasts one hour.

Team Round

The team round consists of teams of four students working together to solve a set of 10–13 problems, each with multiple parts. Schools may enter multiple teams in a division if enough students register. Success in this round depends on communication, accuracy, and efficient problem-solving.

State Competition:

The state competition follows a similar format but also includes additional events and special rounds that may vary each year. Be sure to review the competition information beforehand and ask questions if you need clarification.
